Certificate in lighting planning, lighting technology 


Our certificates rely on a hierarchical training structure. You can follow your individual pathway to reach a knowledge level that fulfills your personal needs.

The Academy's certificate courses conclude with a qualifying certificate that is valid worldwide. Certification is carried out according to documented standards. The certificates are divided into four levels and enjoy a very high level of recognition in the lighting industry.(References).

*For the Certified lighting designer interior lighting or theCertified lighting designer outdoor lighting At the Lighting Planner Academy, you can combine a 3-day basic and a 3-day advanced certificate. You can complete both certificates independently within 12 months or as a one-week compact course.


**After the certificates expire, a short homework assignment (planning task) must be completed for the purpose of renewal, or an "Update Day for Certified Persons" must be attended at the Academy, which offers participants an update on standards, technical and design topics.


Level 1 - Basic Certificate for Interior Lighting

Basic certificate for outdoor lighting


The basic certificate is the first step on the way tocertified lighting planner interior lighting orcertified lighting planner outdoor lighting.The most important basics of lighting technology and lighting planning are taught.


By purchasing the 3-dayBasic certificate At the academy, you will demonstrate that you have mastered the basic technical skills of lighting design for indoor and outdoor spaces and that you can plan geometrically uncomplicated lighting systems in accordance with standards using DIALUX/RELUX.


Course content: Basic certificate - Interior lighting

  • Basic lighting parameters & light perception
  • Lamps, luminaires and LED technology in interior lighting
  • Lighting standard (12464-1,2) and ASR 3.4
  • Basic principles of interior lighting design
  • Planning interior lighting on the computer with DIALUX/RELUX (rendering, compliance with standards, parts lists)
  • Economic efficiency calculations on the computer with LightBooster 2.0 (pay back/net present value)


  • Course content: Basic Certificate - Outdoor Lighting
  • Basic lighting parameters
  • Lamps, luminaires and LED technology in outdoor lighting
  • Lighting standards (EN 13201, 12464-2, stray light according to LAI and ÖNORM 1052)
  • Lighting of sports facilities (EN 12193)
  • Basic principles of lighting design in outdoor spaces and on facades
  • Plan streets, squares and facades on the computer with DIALUX (rendering, standard compliance, parts lists)
  • Economic efficiency calculations on the computer with LightBooster 2.0 (pay back/net present value)


  • Course schedule: Seminar preparation, 3-day classroom course (20 hours), homework covering lighting technology and lighting planning (approx. 8 hours). Basic certificate validity: 48 months



Level 2 - Advanced Certificates


Certified lighting designer interior lighting

Certified lighting designer for outdoor lighting


The advanced certificate is the second step on the way tocertified lighting planner interior lighting orcertified lighting planner outdoor lighting.The prerequisite for admission to the advanced certificate is the basic certificate from the academy or other evidence of comparable prior knowledge.


By purchasing the 3-dayAdvanced certificateeAt the academy, you will demonstrate your mastery of the technical and design principles of lighting design for interior and exterior spaces. You will be able to render geometrically complex lighting systems in accordance with standards using DIALUX/RELUX.


Course content: Advanced certificate - Interior lighting

  • Human Centric Lighting and control of interior lighting systems
  • Design and creative techniques in interior lighting design
  • Implement your own designs with DIALUX (professional renderings, some with dynamics)
  • Technical excursion to selected lighting systems near the event venue


Course content: Advanced certificate - outdoor lighting

  • Design and creative techniques in outdoor lighting design (squares/facades/greening)
  • Municipal master plans; interfaces with urban planning, city marketing and energy suppliers
  • Implement your own more complex designs (squares/facades/greening) with DIALUX OUTDOOR (renderings)
  • Technical excursion to selected lighting systems near the event venue


Procedure: Seminar preparation, 3-day classroom course (20 hours), term paper with technical and lighting design content (approx. 8 hours). Certificate validity: 48 months. Entry requirements: Basic certificate from the academy or comparable prior knowledge.


Course content: Advanced Certificate - Creative Lighting Planning

  • Guiding principles in planning practice, important demarcations
  • Design lighting concepts based on needs assessments and the architectural/urban context
  • Five modern design techniques in lighting planning (Design Thinking approach)
  • Basic structural principles of lighting design (Kelly/Layer)
  • Graphic and drawing visualizations
  • Professional project presentations to customers/clients
  • Commercial strategies/Strategic approach for lighting designers in marketing their own planning services



Level 3 – DACH Certificate I - Lighting Planning


Certified lighting planner / Certified specialist planner for lighting


Level 3 already includes levels 1-2


By acquiring the academy's 12-day DACH Certificate I, you will master the design and lighting technology fundamentals of indoor and outdoor lighting design and qualify as a certified lighting designer. You will complete the two 3-dayBasic certificates for indoor and outdoor lighting(Level 1) and the two 3-day advanced certificates in interior and exterior lighting (Level 2, interior or exterior lighting). With the DACH-I certificate, you demonstrate a firm grasp of the practical, technical, and design fundamentals of lighting planning for interiors and exteriors (interiors, facades, squares, and roads).


Program: Seminar preparation, 4 x 3-day or 2 x 1-week face-to-face sessions (80 hours) within 6-18 months, 2 term papers covering lighting technology and lighting design for indoor and outdoor lighting (approx. 20 hours). Validity of the DACH-I certificate: 72 months.



Level 4 – DACH Certificate II - Lighting Design

Level 4 already includes levels 1-3


This 20-day executive program qualifies you as a fully fledged professional in lighting design. Unlike the Level 1, 2, and 3 certificates, this program also intensively develops your design skills. Over a period of 9-24 months, you will participate in the Executive Program's 16 classroom-based and 4 project days, and you will complete multiple assessments to demonstrate your proficiency in the course content. Previous achievements from SLG 1, 2, or other lighting academies (DIAL, TRILUX, PHILIPS, etc.) may be credited. Please feel free to ask us for details.


Course content: Specialist planner for light & lighting design / qualified lighting planner

  • Basic lighting parameters & light perception indoors and outdoors
  • Basics of electrical engineering
  • Lamps, lighting and LED technology
  • Basics of Human Centric Lighting and Lighting Control
  • Lighting standards for indoor/outdoor lighting [EN 12464-1,2, EN 13201, EN 1838 (emergency lighting), EN 1052 (obstrusive light)]
  • Basic principles of lighting design for interiors, streets, squares, facades
  • Planning lighting systems on the computer with DIALUX based on case studies for hall, office, shop, hotel, street, sidewalk, square, park and façade lighting (renderings, standard compliance, parts lists)
  • DIALUX Advanced: complex and dynamic lighting planning and renderings
  • Daylight planning and daylight control
  • Design techniques in lighting design
  • Special areas of lighting design
  • Economic efficiency calculations on the computer with LightBooster 2.0 (pay back/net present value)
  • Management of lighting projects (conception, process organization, controlling)
  • Presentation and sale of lighting products and projects
  • Prepare, conduct and follow up on customer meetings professionally


Procedure: Preparatory work, participation in the DACH Certificate I course program (12 classroom days, 80 hours) and a further four classroom and four project days (64 hours), two to three term papers with lighting technology and lighting planning content (approx. 20 hours), and one complex lighting design assignment at the end (project work, approx. 40 hours). Validity of the DACH II certificate: unlimited.


The Academy's degrees are registered with the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) in Munich and are thus protected from unjustified use for the benefit of our graduates.
